Abstract: To evaluate the impact potential of nandrolone decanoate on DNA damage in multiple organs of Wistar rats by means of single-cell gel (comet) assay and micronucleus test. A total of 15 animals were distributed into three groups of five animals each as follows: control group = animal not exposed to nandrolone decanoate; experimental group = animals exposed to nandrolone decanoate for 24 h at 5 mg/kg subcutaneously; and experimental group = animals exposed to nandrolone decanoate for 24 h at 15 mg/kg subcutaneously. Significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) were noted in peripheral blood, liver, and heart cells exposed to nandrolone decanoate at the two doses evaluated. A clear dose–response relationship was observed between groups. Kidney cells showed genetic damage at only the highest dose (15 mg/kg) used. However, micronucleus data did not show remarkable differences among groups. In conclusion, the present study indicates that nandrolone decanoate induces genetic damage in rat blood, liver, heart, and kidney cells as shown by single-cell gel (comet) assay results.

TL;DR: Results show that chronically administered DECA is able to disrupt the cellular redox balance, leading to an oxidative stress state.
Hepatotoxicity reports in the FDA adverse event reporting system database: A comparison of drugs that cause injury via mitochondrial or other mechanisms
TL;DR: The findings from this study align with mitochondrial mechanisms of toxicity being an important cause of DILI, and this should be further investigated in real-world studies with robust designs.

TL;DR: The results confirmed that the use of AAS is associated with a lot of deleterious effects on the cardiac, nephritic and gonadic tissues which cannot be reversible.

Reversal of the hepatic damage induced by the supraphysiological dose of nandrolone decanoate after its withdrawal in the adult male rat.
TL;DR: Results showed that supraphysiological dose of nandrolone has hepatotoxic effects in the adult rat and showed that these toxic effects are reversible after treatment withdrawal.

Increased formation of micronuclei after hormonal stimulation of cell proliferation in human breast cancer cells
TL;DR: Formation of micronuclei was not due to the chromosomal damaging activity of estradiol, and induced genomic damage may be explained by a hormone-specific forcing of responsive cells through the cell cycle, thereby overriding checkpoints operating under homeostatic control of thecell cycle.

Mutagenicity testing with transgenic mice. Part I: Comparison with the mouse bone marrow micronucleus test
TL;DR: Although, the transgenic animal mutation assay is not directly comparable with the micronucleus test, because different genetic endpoints are examined: chromosome aberration versus gene mutation, the results for the majority of substances were in agreement.

Mutagenicity testing with transgenic mice. Part II: Comparison with the mouse spot test.
TL;DR: It seems that the transgenic mouse assay has several advantages over the mousespot test and may be a suitable test system replacing the mouse spot test for detection of gene but not chromosome mutations in vivo.

Dose-response studies of the induction of hyperdiploidy and polyploidy by diethylstilbestrol and 17β-estradiol in cultured human lymphocytes using multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization
TL;DR: The results indicate that the induction of hyperdiploidy/polyploidsy with DES and E2 show sublinear dose‐response relationships with likely threshold concentrations in human lymphocytes and that FISH with multiple probes targeting different chromosomes can be used to estimate hyperdiPloidy and polyploidY frequencies.

TL;DR: It is suggested that vitamin C can prevent hypertension-induced DNA damage in blood, liver, brain and heart cells as well as to normalize the blood pressure of rats.
