Abstract: Lipids are a vital class of essential metabolites which have many key biological functions. Lipidomics is a subdiscipline of metabolomics, with the focus on the global study of molecular lipids, including pathways and networks of cellular lipids in biological systems. The recent advances in mass spectrometry have highly influenced the field of lipidomics. This chapter describes the main methods utilized in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics, including shotgun MS, surface MS, and MS combined with chromatographic techniques.
