Abstract: There is still the need for efficacious therapies for pain. In the search for new therapeutic options, plants are a major source of novel biomolecules. Monoterpenes constitute 90% of essential oils, and there is a growing interest in understanding the mechanisms underlying their pharmacological activity. This systematic review reports what is so far known about the analgesic activity of monoterpenes and also provides an overview of their mechanisms of action. The search terms analgesia, anti-inflammatory, anaesthetic and antioxidant were used to retrieve English language articles in SCOPUS, PUBMED and EMBASE published between 1990 and 2012. Forty-five papers were found concerning the potential analgesic activity of 27 monoterpenes. The data reviewed here suggest these compounds are possible candidates for the treatment of painful conditions.

Antioxidant activity of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) essential oil and its hepatoprotective potential
Aleksandar Rašković,Isidora Milanovic,Nebojša Pavlović,Tatjana Ćebović,Saša Vukmirović,Momir Mikov +5 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that rosemary essential oil, beside exhibiting free radical scavenging activity determined by DPPH assay, mediates its hepatoprotective effects also through activation of physiological defense mechanisms.
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) and its bioactive constituents.
TL;DR: The aim of this updated review is to highlight the importance of coriander as a potential source of bioactive constituents and to summarize their biological activities as well as their different applications from data obtained in recent literature, with critical analysis on the gaps and potential for future investigations.

TL;DR: Antioxidant supplementation was effective in relieving pain and reducing levels of oxidative stress in patients with CP.
Effects of Linalool on [3H] MK801 and [3H] Muscimol Binding in Mouse Cortical Membranes
TL;DR: The data suggest that the anticonvulsant mode of action of linalool includes a direct interaction with the NMDA receptor complex, although changes in GABA‐mediated neuronal inhibition or effects on GABA release and uptake cannot be ruled out.
Targeting Nuclear Factor-κB Activation Pathway by Thymoquinone: Role in Suppression of Antiapoptotic Gene Products and Enhancement of Apoptosis
TL;DR: The results indicate that the anticancer and antiinflammatory activities previously assigned to TQ may be mediated in part through the suppression of the NF-κB activation pathway, and thus may have potential in treatment of myeloid leukemia and other cancers.
Menthol desensitization of capsaicin irritation. Evidence of a short-term anti-nociceptive effect.
TL;DR: It is inferred from results that method can transiently desensitize capsaicin-sensitive fibers, but that exposure to Capsaicin rapidly overrides the effect.
Involvement of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors in (-γ)-linalool-induced antinociception

- 01 Jan 2006
TL;DR: The findings demonstrated that the effect of (-)-linalool on pain responses is, at least partially, mediated by the activity of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors.
