Towards standardization of RNA quality assessment using user-independent classifiers of microcapillary electrophoresis traces
Sandrine Imbeaud,Esther Graudens,Virginie Boulanger,Xavier Barlet,Patrick Zaborski,Eric Eveno,Odilo Mueller,Andreas Schroeder,Charles Auffray +8 more
TL;DR: The reliability of conventional methods for RNA quality assessment including UV spectroscopy and 28S:18S area ratios are evaluated, and their inconsistency is demonstrated, and two new freely available classifiers are used, the Degradometer and RIN systems, to produce user-independent RNA quality metrics, based on analysis of microcapillary electrophoresis traces.

Motheaten and viable motheaten mice have mutations in the haematopoietic cell phosphatase gene.
TL;DR: This work has shown that the basic defect in these mice involves lesions in the gene which encodes haematopoietic cell phosphatase (HCP), and these mice provide excellent models for investigating the roles of phosphatases in haem atopoiesis and the nature of the genetic and cellular events linking impaired haematography to severe immunodeficiency and expression of systemic autoimmunity.

Optimization of Agrobacterium‐mediated transient assays of gene expression in lettuce, tomato and Arabidopsis
TL;DR: The laboratory Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58C1 was the best strain for use in plant species that did not elicit a necrotic response to A. tumfaciens, enabling routine transient assays in these species.

A conserved domain in Bak, distinct from BH1 and BH2, mediates cell death and protein binding functions.
Thomas Chittenden,Cathy Flemington,A. B. Houghton,R. G. Ebb,G. J. Gallo,B. Elangovan,G. Chinnadurai,Robert J. Lutz +7 more
TL;DR: A domain is identified in Bak that is both necessary and sufficient for cytotoxic activity and binding to Bcl‐xL, which is of central importance in mediating the function of multiple cell death‐regulatory proteins that interact with B cl‐2 family members.

Sensitive mRNA detection using unfixed tissue: combined radioactive and non-radioactive in situ hybridization histochemistry
TL;DR: The total exclusion of tissue fixation with tissue sections fixed by immersion in formalin is compared and the effect of dithiothreitol was assessed both when combining radiolabelled and non-radioactive probes on a single tissue section and when the probes were used separately.
