TL;DR: The results indicate that the effect ofacterial exposure on P. falciparum infection varies with factors from the parasite and the human host and calls for deeper dissection of these parameters for accurate interpretation of bacterial exposure results in laboratory settings.

Abstract: The development of Plasmodium falciparum within the Anopheles gambiae mosquito relies on complex vector-parasite interactions, however the resident midgut microbiota also plays an important role in mediating parasite infection. In natural conditions, the mosquito microbial flora is diverse, composed of commensal and symbiotic bacteria. We report here the isolation of culturable midgut bacteria from mosquitoes collected in the field in Cameroon and their identification based on the 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We next measured the effect of selected natural bacterial isolates on Plasmodium falciparum infection prevalence and intensity over multiple infectious feedings and found that the bacteria significantly reduced the prevalence and intensity of infection. These results contrast with our previous study where the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae positively correlated with P. falciparum infection (Boissiere et al. 2012). The oral infection of bacteria probably led to the disruption of the gut homeostasis and activated immune responses, and this pinpoints the importance of studying microbe-parasite interactions in natural conditions. Our results indicate that the effect of bacterial exposure on P. falciparum infection varies with factors from the parasite and the human host and calls for deeper dissection of these parameters for accurate interpretation of bacterial exposure results in laboratory settings.

TL;DR: It is considered that conferring the term holobiont to the mosquito and its microbiota is useful to get a comprehensive understanding of the vector pathosystem functioning so as to be able to develop innovative and efficient novel vector control strategies.
The mosquito microbiota influences vector competence for human pathogens
TL;DR: The midgut of insect vectors of human disease contains not only pathogens harmful to human health, but also a diverse microbiota that can influence insects' susceptibility to human pathogens, and the capacity to transmit them, through different mechanisms.

Composition of Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles gambiae microbiota from larval to adult stages.
Geoffrey Gimonneau,Majoline T. Tchioffo,Luc Abate,Anne Boissière,Parfait Awono-Ambene,Sandrine E. Nsango,Richard Christen,Isabelle Morlais +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that the distribution of bacterial communities in the aquatic habitats differed according to the depth of water collections, and inter-individual variation of bacterial composition was large in larvae guts but adult mosquitoes from a same breeding site shared quite similar microbiota.

Mosquito vector-associated microbiota: Metabarcoding bacteria and eukaryotic symbionts across habitat types in Thailand endemic for dengue and other arthropod-borne diseases.

TL;DR: It is suggested that multiple factors, such as habitat condition and mosquito species identity, may influence overall microbial community composition, and thus provide a basis for further investigations into the interactions between vectors, their microbial communities, and human‐impacted landscapes that may ultimately affect vector‐borne disease risk.

Factors shaping the gut bacterial community assembly in two main Colombian malaria vectors
Priscila Bascuñán,Juan Pablo Niño-García,Yadira Galeano-Castañeda,David Serre,Margarita M. Correa +4 more
TL;DR: The results revealed that mosquito developmental stage, followed by geographical location, are more important determinants of the gut bacterial composition than mosquito species or adult feeding status, and showed that mosquito gut is a major filter for environmental bacteria colonization.

Sex and virulence in Escherichia coli: an evolutionary perspective
Thierry Wirth,Daniel Falush,Ruiting Lan,Frances M. Colles,Patience Mensa,Lothar H. Wieler,Helge Karch,Peter R. Reeves,Martin C. J. Maiden,Howard Ochman,Mark Achtman +10 more
TL;DR: The evolution of virulence is linked to bacterial sex because rates of evolution have accelerated in pathogenic lineages, culminating in highly virulent organisms whose genomic contents are altered frequently by increased rates of homologous recombination.
