Modeling Variability in Individual Development: Differences of degree or kind?
TL;DR: The use of statistical models for analyzing individual change over time is critical for the progress of developmental science as discussed by the authors, with particular attention to the assumptions they make about individual development, and the strengths and limitations of each approach for developmental research.

Abstract: The proper use of statistical models for analyzing individual change over time is critical for the progress of developmental science. Latent curve models, hierarchical linear growth models, group-based trajectory models, and growth mixture models constitute increasingly important tools for longitudinal data analysis. To facilitate their understanding and use, this paper clarifies similarities and differences between these models, with particular attention to the assumptions they make about individual development. An example shows how the results and interpretation vary across model types. Discussion centers on reviewing the strengths and limitations of each approach for developmental research.

Describing and predicting developmental profiles of externalizing problems from childhood to adulthood
TL;DR: The study showed that by using changing, developmentally relevant measures and simultaneously taking into account numerous characteristics of children and their living situations, research can model lengthy spans of development and improve predictions of the development of later, severe externalizing problems.
Introducing the fit-criteria assessment plot - A visualisation tool to assist class enumeration in group-based trajectory modelling.
TL;DR: A graphical summary display of several fit and model adequacy criteria, the fit-criteria assessment plot, is introduced to facilitate class enumeration and is an exploratory, visualisation tool that can be employed to assist decisions in the initial and decisive phase of group-based trajectory modelling analysis.
Experimentation versus progression in adolescent drug use: A test of an emerging neurobehavioral imbalance model.
Atika Khurana,Daniel Romer,Laura M. Betancourt,Nancy L. Brodsky,Joan M. Giannetta,Hallam Hurt +5 more
TL;DR: Findings revealed that an imbalance resulting from weak executive control and heightened reward seeking was predictive of early progression in drug use, while heightened rewardseeking balanced by a strong control system was predicted of occasional experimentation only.
Validating the Rapid Responder Construct Within a Practice Research Network
TL;DR: Replication of earlier results provides further evidence for the usefulness of modeling change during psychotherapy using multiple trajectories and predicts of group membership indicate the influence of functional impairment on recovery, and support the importance of multidimensional measurement of client problems.

Change Over Time: Conducting Longitudinal Studies of Children's Cognitive Development
TL;DR: Methods for integrating longitudinal data into one's research portfolio are outlined and the leveraging of existing longitudinal data sets with the launching of new longitudinal studies to address specific questions concerning cognitive development are contrasted.

Adolescence-limited and life-course-persistent antisocial behavior: A developmental taxonomy.
TL;DR: It is suggested that delinquency conceals 2 distinct categories of individuals, each with a unique natural history and etiology: a small group engages in antisocial behavior of 1 sort or another at every life stage, whereas a larger group is antisocial only during adolescence.

Group-based modeling of development
Daniel S. Nagin
- 01 Jan 2005
TL;DR: In this article, the authors lay out the basic model and select groups as an approximate approximation of the original model, and statistically link group membership to Covariates, and add covariates to the trajectories themselves.
