Abstract: Though the minimum area section isgenerally adopted for lined canals, it is not the bestsection as it does not involve lining cost, and thecost of earthwork which varies with the excavationdepth On account of complexities of analysis, theminimum cost design of lined canal sections has notbeen attempted as yet In this investigation, explicitequations and section shape coefficients for thedesign variables of minimum cost lined canal sectionsfor triangular, rectangular, trapezoidal, and circularshapes have been obtained by applying the nonlinearoptimization technique Application of the proposeddesign equations along with the tabulated sectionshape coefficients results directly in the optimaldimensions of a lined canal without going through theconventional trial and error method of canal designThe optimal cost equation along with the correspondingsection shape coefficients is useful during theplanning of a canal project

Optimum Design of Straight Circular Channels Incorporating Constant and Variable Roughness Scenarios: Assessment of Machine Learning Models
TL;DR: Comparisons indicated that the ML models improved the accuracy of the circular channel design from 55% to 91% based on two performance evaluation criteria, which demonstrates a considerable improvement over the explicit design equations available in the literature.
Optimal alignment of a canal route
Prabhata K. Swamee,Bhagu R. Chahar +1 more
- 01 Sep 2013
TL;DR: In this article, a method of optimising the alignment of an irrigation canal is described, where the topography of a given area is expressed as a double Fourier series and the cost function is formulated for the canal route, taking account of the longitudinal profile of the canal as it crosses the terrain.
