Abstract: This invention relates to electronic devices, which are
capable to continuously measure, through a planned
sampling, some chemical-physical parameters of liquid
substances - in particular, water and water solutions - and
record and transmit such data without any human
intervention. These parameters include (but are not limited
to): temperature, relative hydrostatic pressure as level
indicator, ionic conductivity, pH and redox potential,
concentration of specific ions (Cl - , F - , O -- , NH 4 + , NO 3 -- ,
metal ions, etc.). This invention is characterised in the fact
that all the sensing elements are implemented on a single
substrate and all the electronics performing such functions is
hosted in the same housing of the sensor. Most of the unique
probe functions are implemented by the hardware and
software combination, and the probe itself can be described
as an integrated system. This results in a very compact
device with low power consumption, easy installation and
maintenance and a lower overall operating cost.

Pure water conductivity sensor
Barben Theodore R
- 27 Nov 1986
Abstract: A multiple electrode conductivity sensor generates an
output to be applied to a special temperature compensation
system that responds to a temperature sensor signal indica
tive of the sample water temperature. The temperature signal
selectively operates a memory unit that contains separate
water and salt correction values to be used in adjusting the
measured conductivity output. The water correction value re
presents the conductivity of absolutely pure water at the
measured temperature, and this value can be subtracted
from the measured total conductivity to produce a con
ductivity value attributable only to salt impurities. The salt
correction signal from the memory unit is then used to scale
the measured salt conductivity signal at the standard refer
ence temperature of 25°C, thereby achieving a corrected salt
conductivity measurement that can be added to a fixed pure
water correction signal representative of the conductivity of
pure water at that temperature. The sum of these values
yields an adjusted output signal that accurately reflects the
conductivity (or resistivity) of the pure water solution at the
standard 25°C temperature. To avoid inaccuracies due to el
ectrode deposits, the excitation voltage applied across the
current electrodes of a four electrode conductivity sensor is
monitored to produce a warning whenever the sensor circu
itry nears the limit of its ability to overcome the effect of ac
cumulated deposits, thus alerting the operator to the need for
cleaning the electrodes before substantial inaccuracies can
occur.
