Abstract: We are just beginning to understand the metabolism of heavy metals and to use their metabolic functions in biotechnology, although heavy metals comprise the major part of the elements in the periodic table. Because they can form complex compounds, some heavy metal ions are essential trace elements, but, essential or not, most heavy metals are toxic at higher concentrations. This review describes the workings of known metal-resistance systems in microorganisms. After an account of the basic principles of homoeostasis for all heavy-metal ions, the transport of the 17 most important (heavy metal) elements is compared.

Geomimicry: harnessing the antibacterial action of clays
TL;DR: Understanding the antibacterial mechanism of natural clay may lead to design of new treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with potential applications in wound dressings, medical implants, animal feed stocks, agricultural pathogens, and production of antibacterial building materials.
Differential copper impact on density, diversity and resistance of adapted culturable bacterial populations according to soil organic status.
TL;DR: Evaluation of the copA gene distribution and diversity revealed that few CuR bacteria (from 7 to 13%) possessed this genetic determinant before the addition of metal, and copper contamination induced an increase in the dissemination of homologous copA genes only in Ralstonia like species indigenous to S soils.

Microbially supported phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils: strategies and applications.
TL;DR: The plant-microbe interactions in phytoremediation strategies include mutually beneficial symbiotic associations such as mycorrhiza, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB), or endophytic bacteria that are discussed with respect to their impact on phytorenmediation approaches.

Oxidative dissolution of hydrothermal mixed-sulphide ore: An assessment of current knowledge in relation to seafloor massive sulphide mining
TL;DR: In this paper, a review examines the current understanding of oxidation and dissolution of a mixed sulphide ore, bringing together lines of evidence from a range of literature sources, and highlights the need for subsequent studies that investigate the natural weathering process of seafloor massive sulphide mines, including how this process impacts their economic value and consequent geochemical signature of oxides that are produced over time.

Overview on the role of heavy metals tolerance on developing antibiotic resistance in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
TL;DR: In this article, a review of the environmental cause of multidrug resistance (MDR) that was supposed to be driven by either heavy metals or combination of environmental factors was essentially reviewed, especially focussed on the correlation between accumulation of heavy metals and development of MDR by bacteria.

Molecular biology of microbial ureases.
TL;DR: The crystal structure of the K. aerogenes enzyme has been determined and provides important insight into the mechanism of catalysis, and accessory genes have been shown to be required for activation of urease apoprotein, and roles for the accessory proteins in metallocenter assembly have been proposed.

TL;DR: The first bacterial metallothionein cation-binding proteins, which by definition is a small protein that binds metal cations by means of numerous cysteine thiolates, has been characterized in cyanobacteria.

Alcaligenes eutrophus CH34 is a facultative chemolithotroph with plasmid-bound resistance to heavy metals.
TL;DR: Alcaligenes eutrophus strain CH34, which was isolated as a bacterium resistant to cobalt, zinc, and cadmium ions, shares the ability to grow lithoautotrophically on molecular hydrogen, to form a cytoplasmic NAD-reducing and a membrane-bound hydrogenase, and most metabolic attributes; however, it does not grow on fructose.
