Abstract: This paper presents issues and challenges associated with development of a comprehensive mode choice model for Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and the 11th largest city in the world. As in most other developing countries, reliable level-of-service data are not available for the wide variety of motorized and nonmotorized modes used by travelers in Bangladesh. In addition, the 12 million inhabitants of Dhaka have wide differences in affordability of and accessibility to various modes. These differences result in substantial heterogeneity in inhabitants’ choice sets. These choice sets are also unobserved in the data and not easily inferable from the limited information of the network. This paper identifies key limitations of the available data and proposes methods to overcome those limitations. A probabilistic choice set of modes from a small-scale stated preference survey has been used to account for the absence of actual choice set data. The systematic and stochastic errors in the network-derived time data are explicitly accounted for in the model structure. The improvements from the proposed approaches are demonstrated by prediction tests using holdout samples. The proposed approaches have immense potential to improve travel mode choice models for other cities of Bangladesh, as well as cities in other developing countries, which very often face similar data issues.

Tracing a path to knowledge? Indicative user impacts of introducing a public transport map in Dhaka, Bangladesh
P. Christopher Zegras,Emily Eros,Kuan Butts,Elizabeth Resor,Stephen Kennedy,Albert Ching,Muntasir Mamun +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the potential user impacts of introducing a smartphone-generated and analogue-delivered schematic bus map in a megacity of the Global South, and used a web-based survey to investigate impacts on users' knowledge, as measured by their stated understanding, navigation and perceptions of the system.
How do the perceptions of neighborhood conditions impact active transportation? A study in Rajshahi, Bangladesh
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the perceptions of neighborhood conditions and their effect on urban active transportation in the context of a city in the Global South and found that students are more likely to use active transportation compared to other socio-demographic groups, and that motorized vehicle ownership is associated with lower probabilities of active transportation.

Transport preferences and dilemmas in the post-lockdown (COVID-19) period: Findings from a qualitative study of young commuters in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Shaila Jamal,Sadia Chowdhury,K. Bruce Newbold +2 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews of 20 young commuters residing in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and found that despite the perceived high risk of COVID-19 transmission in certain modes, all commuters don't have the ease and flexibility to switch to their preferred safer mode, with commuters trading-off between health risk, affordability and availability of suitable modes, along with other challenges.

Understanding Immigrants’ Mode Choice behavior in Florida: Analysis of Neighborhood Effects and Cultural Assimilation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed multinomial logit models for mode choice behavior of immigrants, with key focus on neighbourhood effects and behavioural assimilation. But the model results revealed significant influences of neighbourhood and land use variables on the usage of alternative modes among immigrants.

Incorporating random constraints in discrete models of choice set generation
Joffre Swait,Moshe Ben-Akiva +1 more
TL;DR: A behavioral interpretation of the choice set generation process that is useful for structuring and specifying discrete models that incorporate random constraints in the form of probabilistic choice set formation models is proposed.
