Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating an engine system having an engine 10 with an emission control system including a lean NOx trap 70 (LNT) and a particulate filter (DPF) 76. The method includes, after lean exhaust gas air-fuel ratio regeneration of the particulate filter 76 at an elevated regeneration temperature, using a rich or intermittently rich exhaust air-fuel ratio for a duration lasting until the temperature of the lean NOx trap 70 falls to a minimum threshold temperature. The rich or intermittently rich operation is used to reactivate catalysts in the lean NOx trap 70 and reverse deactivation caused by the elevated temperature lean operation associated with the previous regeneration of the particulate filter 76.

Method of reactivating a Passive NOx Adsorber
Filippo Andrea De
- 27 Nov 2013
Abstract: The invention provides a method of reactivating a Passive NOx Adsorber (PNA) 280 in an exhaust line 275 of an Internal Combustion Engine 110, the exhaust line comprising a Diesel Particulate Filter 285, the method comprising the steps of subjecting the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to a regeneration, and performing a rich combustion mode event after the end of the Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration. The passive NOx adsorber is adversely affected by the diesel particulate filter regeneration, and the platinum in the passive NOx adsorber can become platinum oxide which reduces the catalytic performance level. However by subjecting the platinum oxide to a fuel rich exhaust flow the ability of the passive NOx adsorbers to oxidise hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water is restored.

Method for combined regeneration of a particulate filter and desulphurisation of a storage catalyst
Yasser Mohammed Sayed Yacoub
- 20 Jun 2007
TL;DR: In this article, an under-stoichiometric operation of an internal combustion engine for converting the sulphur that is collected and situated in a storage catalyst is maintained for a predetermined time period, where the time period is predetermined as the function of a sulphur conversion rate.
