Abstract: The analysis of medical images has been woven into the fabric of the pattern analysis and machine intelligence (PAMI) community since the earliest days of these Transactions. Initially, the efforts in this area were seen as applying pattern analysis and computer vision techniques to another interesting dataset. However, over the last two to three decades, the unique nature of the problems presented within this area of study have led to the development of a new discipline in its own right. Examples of these include: the types of image information that are acquired, the fully three-dimensional image data, the nonrigid nature of object motion and deformation, and the statistical variation of both the underlying normal and abnormal ground truth. In this paper, we look at progress in the field over the last 20 years and suggest some of the challenges that remain for the years to come.

Computer assisted reconstruction of complex proximal humerus fractures for preoperative planning.
Philipp Fürnstahl,Gábor J. Székely,Christian Gerber,Jürg Hodler,Jess G. Snedeker,Matthias Harders +5 more
TL;DR: A computer assisted approach to precisely quantify fragment displacement in displaced fractures of the proximal humerus is presented, which could be successfully reconstructed with little user interaction, and only requiring a few minutes of processing time.

TL;DR: An entropy-based segmentation algorithm for subcortical brain structures (LocalInfo) was developed and supplemented by both a new multiple atlas strategy and a free-form deformation step to capture structural variability and may prove to be more reliable than currently published automatic segmentation algorithms.

TL;DR: This work uses the Bestel-Clément-Sorine (BCS) electromechanical model of the heart, which provides reasonable accuracy with a reasonable number of parameters compared to the available clinical data at the organ level and proposes a personalization strategy from cine MRI data.

Xiaoning Qian,Matthew P. Brennan,Donald P. Dione,Wawrzyniec L. Dobrucki,Marcel P. Jackowski,Christopher K. Breuer,Albert J. Sinusas,Xenophon Papademetris +7 more
TL;DR: A novel method for detecting vessels in medical images that relaxes this single cylinder assumption is proposed and demonstrates improved performance over standard methods on both 2D synthetic images and 3D animal and clinical vascular images, particularly close to vessel branching regions.

A method for registration of 3-D shapes
Paul J. Besl,H.D. McKay +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a general-purpose representation-independent method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of 3D shapes including free-form curves and surfaces, based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which requires only a procedure to find the closest point on a geometric entity to a given point.

Snakes : Active Contour Models
TL;DR: This work uses snakes for interactive interpretation, in which user-imposed constraint forces guide the snake near features of interest, and uses scale-space continuation to enlarge the capture region surrounding a feature.
Fronts propagating with curvature-dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations
Stanley Osher,James A. Sethian +1 more
TL;DR: The PSC algorithm as mentioned in this paper approximates the Hamilton-Jacobi equations with parabolic right-hand-sides by using techniques from the hyperbolic conservation laws, which can be used also for more general surface motion problems.

Active shape models—their training and application
TL;DR: This work describes a method for building models by learning patterns of variability from a training set of correctly annotated images that can be used for image search in an iterative refinement algorithm analogous to that employed by Active Contour Models (Snakes).

Fronts propagating with curvature dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations. Final report
S. Osher,J.A. Sethian +1 more
