Abstract: The analysis of medical images has been woven into the fabric of the pattern analysis and machine intelligence (PAMI) community since the earliest days of these Transactions. Initially, the efforts in this area were seen as applying pattern analysis and computer vision techniques to another interesting dataset. However, over the last two to three decades, the unique nature of the problems presented within this area of study have led to the development of a new discipline in its own right. Examples of these include: the types of image information that are acquired, the fully three-dimensional image data, the nonrigid nature of object motion and deformation, and the statistical variation of both the underlying normal and abnormal ground truth. In this paper, we look at progress in the field over the last 20 years and suggest some of the challenges that remain for the years to come.

Automatic analysis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using multi-scale quantitative morphology of nerve fibres in corneal confocal microscopy imaging
TL;DR: An automatic analysis and classification system for detecting nerve fibres in CCM images based on a multi-scale adaptive dual-model detection algorithm that exploits the curvilinear structure of the nerve fibre and adapts itself to the local image information.

Medical image segmentation on GPUs – A comprehensive review
Erik Smistad,Erik Smistad,Thomas L. Falch,Mohammadmehdi Bozorgi,Anne C. Elster,Frank Lindseth,Frank Lindseth +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that most segmentation methods may benefit from GPU processing due to the methods' data parallel structure and high thread count, however, factors such as synchronization, branch divergence and memory usage can limit the speedup.

TL;DR: New preprocessing methods are proposed, which perform not only normalization and denoising tasks, but also detect reflections and artifacts in the image, and a random forest algorithm is used to detect the exudates among the candidates.

Nonrigid registration of dynamic medical imaging data using nD + t B-splines and a groupwise optimization approach.
TL;DR: The method showed subvoxel accuracy while delivering smooth transformations, and high consistency of the registration results, and the accuracy of semi-automatic derivation of left ventricular volume curves from 3D+t computed tomography angiography data of the heart was evaluated.

A method for registration of 3-D shapes
Paul J. Besl,H.D. McKay +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a general-purpose representation-independent method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of 3D shapes including free-form curves and surfaces, based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which requires only a procedure to find the closest point on a geometric entity to a given point.

Snakes : Active Contour Models
TL;DR: This work uses snakes for interactive interpretation, in which user-imposed constraint forces guide the snake near features of interest, and uses scale-space continuation to enlarge the capture region surrounding a feature.
Fronts propagating with curvature-dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations
Stanley Osher,James A. Sethian +1 more
TL;DR: The PSC algorithm as mentioned in this paper approximates the Hamilton-Jacobi equations with parabolic right-hand-sides by using techniques from the hyperbolic conservation laws, which can be used also for more general surface motion problems.

Active shape models—their training and application
TL;DR: This work describes a method for building models by learning patterns of variability from a training set of correctly annotated images that can be used for image search in an iterative refinement algorithm analogous to that employed by Active Contour Models (Snakes).
