Abstract: The analysis of medical images has been woven into the fabric of the pattern analysis and machine intelligence (PAMI) community since the earliest days of these Transactions. Initially, the efforts in this area were seen as applying pattern analysis and computer vision techniques to another interesting dataset. However, over the last two to three decades, the unique nature of the problems presented within this area of study have led to the development of a new discipline in its own right. Examples of these include: the types of image information that are acquired, the fully three-dimensional image data, the nonrigid nature of object motion and deformation, and the statistical variation of both the underlying normal and abnormal ground truth. In this paper, we look at progress in the field over the last 20 years and suggest some of the challenges that remain for the years to come.

Dual optimization based prostate zonal segmentation in 3D MR images.
TL;DR: A novel multi-region segmentation approach is proposed to simultaneously segment the prostate and its two major sub-regions from only a single 3D T2-weighted (T2w) MR image, which makes use of the prior spatial region consistency and incorporates a customized prostate appearance model into the segmentation task.

Fully Automatic 3D/2D Subtracted Angiography Registration
Erwan Kerrien,Marie-Odile Berger,Eric Maurincomme,Laurent Launay,Regis Vaillant,Luc Picard +5 more
- 19 Sep 1999
TL;DR: This work has studied the precision reached by registering such volumes with classical 2-D angiography images, inferring this matching only from the sensors of the angiograph machine, and described the error led by such a registration.
Learning to segment dense cell nuclei with shape prior
Xinghua Lou,Ullrich Koethe,Jochen Wittbrodt,Fred A. Hamprecht +3 more
- 16 Jun 2012
TL;DR: This work is motivated by the observation that segmentations with loose boundary or shrinking bias not only jeopardize feature extraction for downstream tasks, but also prevent robust statistical analysis (e.g. modeling of fluorescence distribution).

Automatic graph-cut based segmentation of bones from knee magnetic resonance images for osteoarthritis research
TL;DR: A new, fully automated, content-based system is proposed for knee bone segmentation from magnetic resonance images (MRI) that can distinguish between bone and highly similar adjacent structures, such as fat tissues with high accuracy.

A method for registration of 3-D shapes
Paul J. Besl,H.D. McKay +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a general-purpose representation-independent method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of 3D shapes including free-form curves and surfaces, based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which requires only a procedure to find the closest point on a geometric entity to a given point.

Snakes : Active Contour Models
TL;DR: This work uses snakes for interactive interpretation, in which user-imposed constraint forces guide the snake near features of interest, and uses scale-space continuation to enlarge the capture region surrounding a feature.
Fronts propagating with curvature-dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations
Stanley Osher,James A. Sethian +1 more
TL;DR: The PSC algorithm as mentioned in this paper approximates the Hamilton-Jacobi equations with parabolic right-hand-sides by using techniques from the hyperbolic conservation laws, which can be used also for more general surface motion problems.

Active shape models—their training and application
TL;DR: This work describes a method for building models by learning patterns of variability from a training set of correctly annotated images that can be used for image search in an iterative refinement algorithm analogous to that employed by Active Contour Models (Snakes).

Fronts propagating with curvature dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations. Final report
S. Osher,J.A. Sethian +1 more
- 01 Sep 1987
TL;DR: New numerical algorithms are devised (PSC algorithms) for following fronts propagating with curvature-dependent speed, providing methods that accurately capture the formation of sharp gradients and cusps in the moving fronts.
