Abstract: ThinkerToy is a graphical environment for modeling decision support problems. It provides a tableau on which such problems as landscape planning, service scheduling, and statistical analysis can be modeled and analyzed. Normally, complex mathematical and statistical modeling techniques are needed to perform meaningful analysis. ThinkerToy uses graphical icons with concrete physical properties to replace mathematical relationships and properties. The key construct in this methodology is the ManiplIcon: an icon which is not just a pictorial representation, but also a semantic tool for building models which homorphically represent semi-structured problems.

- 01 Nov 1988
TL;DR: Voyeur is a prototype system that facilitates the construction of application-specific, visual views of parallel programs that have been instrumental in quickly detecting bugs that would have been difficult to detect otherwise.

Unidraw: a framework for building domain-specific
John Vlissides,Mark A. Linton +1 more
- 13 Nov 1989
TL;DR: This paper presents Unidraw and three prototype domain-specific editors the authors have developed with it: a schematic capture system, a user interface builder, and a drawing editor that indicates a substantial reduction in implementation time and effort compared with existing tools.

Generalized graphical object editing
Mark A. Linton,John Vlissides +1 more
- 01 Jan 1990
TL;DR: The Unidraw architecture simplifies the construction of these editors by providing programming abstractions that are common across domains, and results indicate a substantial reduction in implementation time and effort compared with existing tools.

TL;DR: It is shown how this model can provide unified support for lexical, syntactic, and semantic feedback, how the model supports the specification and implementation of dynamically changing graphical layouts, and how it can be used as the basis for support of user extensible interfaces.

An interactive graphics environment for architectural energy simulation
Jon H. Pittman,Donald P. Greenberg +1 more
- 01 Jul 1982
TL;DR: An interactive computer graphics system has been developed for the architecture profession which provides a “design environment” for the evaluation of building energy consumption and allows the designer to visually interpret the results of alternative design strategies.
