Abstract: The littoral active zone, comprising surf zones, beaches, and dunes, must be managed as a sedimentary unit This requires identification of key physical and ecological processes, including potential for erosion, protection of sensitive foredunes, and demarcation of setbacks It is also necessary to assess pollution health and safety risks, undertake Environmental Impact Assessments for any developments, develop inclusive management plans, and control access while considering carrying capacity Further, beaches need to be approached as social-ecological systems (SES) in terms of governance and management, also considering key external drivers In many cases, managers need to consider multiple uses, especially to deal simultaneously with recreation and conservation needs and avoid conflicts Implementation of spatiotemporal zoning, institutional and operational management tools, is a promising approach for sustainable management of sandy-beach services following an SES framework Marine protected areas (MPAs), which have not been widely implemented in sandy beaches, can be a key tool for biodiversity conservation and should also facilitate spillover effects into adjacent beach habitats Coastal networks combining no-take MPAs and MPAs with limited level of human activities, comanagement, and exploitation areas sustaining exclusive community rights could represent a short- to midterm management objective that balances bio-socioeconomic factors

TL;DR: A recent review as discussed by the authors describes several restoration successes in Australia and New Zealand, with a focus on emerging techniques for restoration, key considerations for future programs, and highlights the benefits of increased collaboration, Traditional Owner (First Nation) and stakeholder engagement.
Finding water scarcity amid abundance using human-natural system models
William K. Jaeger,Adell L. Amos,Daniel P. Bigelow,Heejun Chang,David R. Conklin,Roy Haggerty,Christian Langpap,Kathleen Dean Moore,Philip W. Mote,Anne W. Nolin,Andrew J. Plantinga,Cynthia Schwartz,Desiree Tullos,David P. Turner +13 more
TL;DR: Key determinants of water scarcity are found to be the cost of transporting and storing water, society’s institutions that circumscribe human choices, and the opportunity cost of water when alternative uses compete.

TL;DR: It is shown that many European national parks do not fulfil the aims of protected area management as set by IUCN guidelines, and the importance of creating a more integrated European ungulate management policy to meet the aims and objectives of national parks is highlighted.

Hierarchical structuring of genetic variation at differing geographic scales in the cultivated sugar kelp Saccharina latissima
Karen Mooney,Gemma E. Beatty,Björn Elsäßer,Emily S. Follis,Louise Kregting,Nessa E. O'Connor,Gillian Riddell,Jim Provan +7 more
TL;DR: Patterns suggest that factors other than simple geographical distance and proximity need to be taken into account when planning the siting of kelp farms with the aim of minimizing gene flow to and from natural populations.

Genetic analysis reveals historical and contemporary population dynamics in the longfin squid Doryteuthis gahi: implications for cephalopod management and conservation
TL;DR: Evidence is added that loliginid squids typically display connected populations over large geographical areas unless specific oceanographic features restrict gene flow, and recognition of the Peruvian and Chilean–Falklands groups as distinct evolutionary significant units is recommended.

Ungulate flight responses to human disturbance: a review and meta-analysis.
TL;DR: Evidence is found that ungulates pay attention to approacher behavior, have greater perceptions of risk when disturbed in open habitats, and females or groups with young offspring show greater flight responses than adult groups.
