Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact light source device while improving light utilization efficiency, and a polarization conversion element. SOLUTION: This light source device 1 includes: a light source 11 for emitting light of first wavelength; and a reflection type polarization element 16 which transmits a first linear polarization component out of first and second linear polarization components orthogonal to each other and reflects the second linear polarization component, and emits only the first linear polarization component of light of second wavelength generated using the light of first wavelength from the light source 11. In this light source device 1, a wavelength conversion element 14 for converting light of first wavelength to light of second wavelength, and a dichroic mirror 13 for transmitting light of first wavelength and reflecting light of second wavelength are arranged between the light source 11 and the reflection type polarization element 16 to be set in order of the light source 11, the dichroic mirror 13, the wavelength conversion element 14 and the reflection type polarization element 16.
