Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the light emitting element, which has high directivity even if the high density and the compact configuration are achieved and has the excellent light retrieving efficiency without light emitting irregularity. SOLUTION: This element is the light emitting element, which has nitride- based compound semiconductors 103 and 104 on a translucent insulating substrate 102 and an electrode 105, which supplies the power for emitting the light on the nitride-based compound semiconductors 103 and 104. A light shielding member 101, which shields a part of the emitted light transmitted through the translucent insulating substrate 102 from the nitride-based compound semiconductors 103 and 104, is provided on the surface facing the nitride-based compound semiconductors 103 and 104 through the translucent insulating substrate 102. Thus, the distance of the light emitting surface and the upper part of a mask can be made short to the thickness of the mask, and the configuration can be made compact. Furthermore, since there is not unnecessary reflectable body or the like and the distance to the light emitting surface becomes short, the light retrieving efficiency becomes excellent. In addition, the arbitrary spot shape can be obtained by changing the mask shape.
