Abstract: AbstractThis chapter provides an overview of those concepts and theories in connection with tasks that are the most relevant to the empirical studies which will be discussed in later chapters of the book. First of all tasks are defined, which is followed by a discussion of different task types. Next, potentially important task features are explored: besides various frameworks of task difficulty and complexity, important aspects of task content are highlighted as well. The chapter closes with an overview about how task performance should be measured: issues related to evaluating complexity, accuracy, lexis and fluency are discussed.

A framework for the implementation of task-based instruction
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine les critiques concernant cette mode actuelle de lenseignement de la langue en matiere de communication, and passe en revue les theories and les recherches qui decrivent ses limites and ses qualites.

Task complexity, task difficulty, and task production : Exploring interactions in a componential framework
TL;DR: The authors examined the effects of the cognitive complexity of tasks on language production and learner perceptions of task difficulty, and for motivating sequencing decisions in task-based syllabuses, and found that increasing the complexity of a direction-giving map task significantly affects speaker-information-giver production.

Towards an Organic Approach to Investigating CAF in Instructed SLA: The Case of Complexity
John M. Norris,Lourdes Ortega +1 more
TL;DR: The authors examine current practices in the measurement of syntactic complexity to illustrate the need for more organic and sustainable practices in measurement of complexity, accuracy, and fluency in second language production.

The Influence of Planning and Task Type on Second Language Performance
Pauline Foster,Peter Skehan +1 more
TL;DR: The study reports strong effects of planning on fluency and clear effects also on complexity, with a linear relationship between degree of planning and degree of complexity, However, a more complex relationship was discovered between planning and accuracy, and interactions were found between task type and planning conditions.
