1. Why is accurate estimation of cropland carbon budgets vital?
Accurate estimation of cropland carbon budgets is vital to assessing the climate change mitigation potentials of terrestrial ecosystems. Cropland carbon budgets play an important role in regional carbon budgets, especially in areas where cropland dominates the landscape, such as the U.S. Midwest. However, there is currently no reliable product on cropland carbon budget with high spatial and temporal resolutions over the U.S. Midwest. Empirical studies using flux tower observations can quantify different components of cropland carbon budget at a local scale, but scaling up to regional scales is challenging. Process-based models can simulate individual components of cropland carbon budget, but they lack effective constraints from observations. To address this gap, a knowledge-based artificial intelligence approach was used to integrate the advanced ecosystem model, ecosys, with new remotely-sensed daily ecosystem gross primary production (GPP) observations to estimate crop yield, ecosystem respiration (Reco), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) at field scale in the U.S. Midwestern cropland.
