Abstract: Decision making often asks for classification. We will present a new R package klaR including functions to build, check, tune, visualize, and compare classification rules. The software is illustrated by means of a case study of prediction of the German economy’s business cycle phases.

TL;DR: The results show that ecological conditions in the Mara River basin were fairly stable over paleoecological time scales, but there has been a period of rapid change in the basin over the last 250 years, particularly since the 1960s, and patterns of change also experienced in other basins throughout East Africa.
Vocal repertoire of captive northern and southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus and G. volans)
TL;DR: The vocal repertoire of high-frequency calls in two species of North American flying squirrels is described, showing overlap in the repertoire of both species, although variation between species is evident in certain call-types.

TL;DR: It is concluded that simple shape features are ineffective for classifying carbonate pore types, and this study will provide a foundation for more robust artificial intelligence‐assisted pore typing.

Vocal Communication within the Genus Chlorocebus: Insights into Mechanisms of Call Production and Call Perception
Tabitha Price
- 11 Sep 2013
TL;DR: The overall aim of these studies is to increase understanding of the proximate mechanisms and selective pressures that shape the production and perception of functionally referential alarm calls in the African green monkey, with the broader goal of offering insights into the emergence of vocal flexibility and meaning in language.

TL;DR: This study demonstrates the power of large-scale genomics to assess potential sources of ExPEC strains and highlights the importance of a One Health approach to identify and manage these human pathogens.

Regularized Discriminant Analysis
TL;DR: Alternatives to the usual maximum likelihood estimates for the covariance matrices are proposed, characterized by two parameters, the values of which are customized to individual situations by jointly minimizing a sample-based estimate of future misclassification risk.

Stability of multivariate representation of business cycles over time

- 30 Sep 2002
TL;DR: It is found that, somewhat surprisingly, only two variables, ’wage and salary earners’ and ’unit labor costs’, are able to characterize the German business cycle not only the most stable over all subcycles but also with a quite reasonable error rate.
