Abstract: A new method for performing a nonlinear form of Principal Component Analysis is proposed. By the use of integral operator kernel functions, one can efficiently compute principal components in highdimensional feature spaces, related to input space by some nonlinear map; for instance the space of all possible d-pixel products in images. We give the derivation of the method and present experimental results on polynomial feature extraction for pattern recognition.

- 11 Apr 2008
TL;DR: Investigation of a kernel-based CEM, called Kernel CEM (K-CEM), which employs various kernels to expand the original data space to a higher dimensional feature space that CEM can be operated on but does not show significant improvement in detecting targets in multispectral imagery which provides limited spectral information for the CEM to work well.

Iterative Non-linear Dimensionality Reduction with Manifold Sculpting
Michael S. Gashler,Dan Ventura,Tony Martinez +2 more
- 03 Dec 2007
TL;DR: Manifold Sculpting is a new algorithm that iteratively reduces dimensionality by simulating surface tension in local neighborhoods that yields more accurate results than existing algorithms with both generated and natural data-sets.
Machine Learning for In Silico Virtual Screening and Chemical Genomics: New Strategies
Jean-Philippe Vert,Laurent Jacob +1 more
TL;DR: This review presents the main ideas underlying support vector machines and kernel methods, survey how both the “biological” and “chemical” spaces have been separately constructed using the same mathematical framework and tricks, and suggest different avenues to unify both spaces for the purpose of in silico chemogenomics.

TL;DR: The use of natural symmetries (mirror images) in a well-defined family of patterns (human faces) is discussed within the framework of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion, which results in an extension of the data and imposes even and odd symmetry on the eigenfunctions of the covariance matrix.
