Abstract: A new method for performing a nonlinear form of Principal Component Analysis is proposed. By the use of integral operator kernel functions, one can efficiently compute principal components in highdimensional feature spaces, related to input space by some nonlinear map; for instance the space of all possible d-pixel products in images. We give the derivation of the method and present experimental results on polynomial feature extraction for pattern recognition.

Simple statistical methods for unsupervised brain anomaly detection on MRI are competitive to deep learning methods.
TL;DR: It is shown that also simple statistical methods such as voxel-wise (baseline and covariance) models and a linear projection method using spatial patterns can achieve DL-equivalent (3D convolutional autoencoder) performance in unsupervised pathology detection.

- 07 Sep 2015
TL;DR: This paper proposes a weighted rank correlation measure, called scaled gamma, that is related to Goodman and Kruskal's gamma rank correlation and is parametrized by a fuzzy equivalence relation on the rank positions, which is specified conveniently by a so-called scaling function.
High-Dimensional Intrinsic Interpolation Using Gaussian Process Regression and Diffusion Maps
TL;DR: This article introduces a novel regression procedure for intrinsic variables constrained onto a manifold embedded in an ambient space meant to sharpen high-dimensional interpolation by inferring non-linear correlations from the data being interpolated.

Michael Kirby,Lawrence Sirovich +1 more
TL;DR: The use of natural symmetries (mirror images) in a well-defined family of patterns (human faces) is discussed within the framework of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion, which results in an extension of the data and imposes even and odd symmetry on the eigenfunctions of the covariance matrix.
