Abstract: Ionic liquids are salts that are liquid at low temperature (<100 degrees C) which represent a new class of solvents with nonmolecular, ionic character. Even though the first representative has been known since 1914, ionic liquids have only been investigated as solvents for transition metal catalysis in the past ten years. Publications to date show that replacing an organic solvent by an ionic liquid can lead to remarkable improvements in well-known processes. Ionic liquids form biphasic systems with many organic product mixtures. This gives rise to the possibility of a multiphase reaction procedure with easy isolation and recovery of homogeneous catalysts. In addition, ionic liquids have practically no vapor pressure which facilitates product separation by distillation. There are also indications that switching from a normal organic solvent to an ionic liquid can lead to novel and unusual chemical reactivity. This opens up a wide field for future investigations into this new class of solvents in catalytic applications.

Novel Bronsted acidic ionic liquid as efficient and reusable catalyst system for esterification
Jianzhou Gui,Jianzhou Gui,Xiaohui Cong,Dan Liu,Xiaotong Zhang,Zhide Hu,Zhaolin Sun,Zhaolin Sun +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a halogen-free Bronsted acidic ionic liquid was used for esterification of alcohols by acetic acid, and good conversion rate and high selectivity were obtained, and the liquid esters formed a separate phase that was decanted.

Optimizing lipases and related enzymes for efficient application
TL;DR: This work has shown that rational protein design and directed evolution have emerged as efficient alternative methods to optimize biocatalytic reactions and can be transferred from one reaction system or substrate to another.

NMR spectroscopic studies of cellobiose solvation in EmimAc aimed to understand the dissolution mechanism of cellulose in ionic liquids
TL;DR: NMR data of the model system clearly suggest hydrogen bonding is formed between hydroxyls of cellobiose and both anion and cation of EmimAc, and in situ and variable-temperature NMR spectra suggest the above mechanism also works in the real system.
