Abstract: The 19th century St. Thomas'Anglican churchyard in Belleville, Ontario, Canada is associated with a large and well-preserved infant skeletal collection (n = 149) and good-quality parish records that document interments in the graveyard (1821-1874). By using a combination of historical demographic and stable nitrogen isotope analyses on the parish records and skeletal remains, respectively, a general pattern of extended nursing for about 14 months, introduction of foods other than breast milk by around 5 months of age, and variation in breast-feeding and weaning behaviours were detected for St. Thomas' infants. The results demonstrate that it is possible to go beyond the concept of weaning age to explore the weaning process in past populations when appropriate and large samples of documentary and skeletal data are available.

Giving a Voice to the Little Ones: The Bioarchaeology of Children in the Baltics
Alessandra Morrone
- 28 Dec 2020
TL;DR: In the last decade, worldwide interest in the archaeology of children has grown, and has driven the bioarchaeological investigation of their skeletal remains as mentioned in this paper, however, the study of non-adults in the Baltics has received surprisingly little interest.
Far from home: A multi-analytical approach revealing the journey of an African-born individual to imperial Rome
Kevin Salesse,Kevin Salesse,Elise Dufour,Vincent Balter,Robert H. Tykot,Nina Maaranen,Maïté Rivollat,Maïté Rivollat,Arwa Kharobi,Arwa Kharobi,Marie-France Deguilloux,Marie-Hélène Pemonge,Jaroslav Brůžek,Jaroslav Brůžek,Dominique Castex +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the first example of an African-born migrant, with an origin beyond the southern imperial border, discovered in Rome is presented, and the successful isotopic and dental morphology analyses suggest that the individual was probably born in the vicinity of the Nile Valley or within the central Sahara Desert.

WEaning Age FiNder (WEAN): a tool for estimating weaning age from stable isotope ratios of dentinal collagen
TL;DR: WEAN as mentioned in this paper is a tool that enables automated estimation of weaning age based on δ 15 N measurements from incremental dentine collagen, which can be used for exploration of breastfeeding and weaning patterns in antiquity.

Postmortem preservation and alteration of in vivo bone collagen isotope ratios in relation to palaeodietary reconstruction
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the first examination of the validity of this assumption and show that postmortem alteration of bone collagen isotope ratios does occur, but that it is possible to identify prehistoric bones whose collagen has not undergone such alteration.

Nitrogen and carbon isotopic composition of bone collagen from marine and terrestrial animals
TL;DR: Results indicate that bone collagen δ15N values will be useful in determining relative dependence on marine and terrestrial food sources and in investigating trophic level relationships among different animal species within an ecosystem.

Effects of diet, climate and physiology on nitrogen isotope abundances in terrestrial foodwebs
TL;DR: Variations in nitrogen isotope ratios in terrestrial foodwebs are described, and alternative models for variation in the enrichment between trophic levels are evaluated, and herbivore species with physiological adaptations to water conservation have higher nitrogen isotopes than water-dependent species.
