Abstract: The 19th century St. Thomas'Anglican churchyard in Belleville, Ontario, Canada is associated with a large and well-preserved infant skeletal collection (n = 149) and good-quality parish records that document interments in the graveyard (1821-1874). By using a combination of historical demographic and stable nitrogen isotope analyses on the parish records and skeletal remains, respectively, a general pattern of extended nursing for about 14 months, introduction of foods other than breast milk by around 5 months of age, and variation in breast-feeding and weaning behaviours were detected for St. Thomas' infants. The results demonstrate that it is possible to go beyond the concept of weaning age to explore the weaning process in past populations when appropriate and large samples of documentary and skeletal data are available.

TL;DR: In this article , stable isotope analysis of bone collagen samples from 176 individuals between the fetal and the 7-15 age categories from four urban/rural South-Estonian cemeteries was cross-sectionally analyzed via EA-IRMS for δ13C and δ15N.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used dental histological methods to analyse enamel micro-defects as indicators of early life stress in indigenous Muchik individuals interred at two sites: La Capilla Santa Maria Magdalena de Eten (CSMME) (n = 15) and LaCapilla del Nino Serranito (CNS), both located in the Lambayeque Valley region of northern Peru.

Evolution of Lactase Persistence: Turbo-Charging Adaptation in Growth Under the Selective Pressure of Maternal Mortality?
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed that the combination of consuming milk and lactase persistence could have reduced maternal mortality by promoting growth of the pelvis after weaning, while high calcium intake would reduce risk of pelvic deformities.

Postmortem preservation and alteration of in vivo bone collagen isotope ratios in relation to palaeodietary reconstruction
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the first examination of the validity of this assumption and show that postmortem alteration of bone collagen isotope ratios does occur, but that it is possible to identify prehistoric bones whose collagen has not undergone such alteration.

Effects of diet, climate and physiology on nitrogen isotope abundances in terrestrial foodwebs
TL;DR: Variations in nitrogen isotope ratios in terrestrial foodwebs are described, and alternative models for variation in the enrichment between trophic levels are evaluated, and herbivore species with physiological adaptations to water conservation have higher nitrogen isotopes than water-dependent species.
