Abstract: This is a paperback edition of a distinguished book, originally published by Clarendon Press in 1971. It was then the first text on critical phenomena, a field that has enjoyed great activity for the past twenty years and that still continues to attract much attention. The book is at the level at which a graduate student who has studied condensed matter physics can begin to comprehend the nature of phase transitions, which involve the transformation of one state of matter into another. (A simple example is the melting of a solid to become a liquid.) Such a transformation is termed 'critical' when, after a certain amount of the substance changes phase, the entire bulk virtually instantaneously also makes the transition. A second, updated edition is planned for future publication, but in the mean time this paperback reissue will be useful in teaching the fundamental principles of this extremely interesting subject.

Piezoeffects and ferroelectric phenomena in smectic liquid crystals
S. A. Pikin,V. L. Indenbom +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the dependence of the amplitude and pitch of the ferroelectric helix on the material parameters is calculated in the framework of the phenomenological theory of phase transitions, and experiments which can help to estimate the independent material constants determining the physical properties of such pseudo-proper liquid ferroelectrics are discussed.

Microscopic model approaches to fragmentation of nuclei and phase transitions in nuclear matter
J. Richert,P. Wagner +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the properties of excited nuclear matter and the quest for a phase transition which is expected to exist in this system are the subject of intensive investigations, and the analysis of experimental data is confronted with two major problems, the setting up of thermodynamic equilibrium in a timedependent fragmentation process and the finite size of nuclei.

Lithium intercalation in Li x Mo 6 Se 8 : A model mean-field lattice gas
TL;DR: In this paper, mean-field fits to the inverse derivative of the voltage of a single-parameter lattice gas model were presented for an intercalation system and the first realization of a three-dimensional mean field lattice model was achieved.
