Abstract: This is a paperback edition of a distinguished book, originally published by Clarendon Press in 1971. It was then the first text on critical phenomena, a field that has enjoyed great activity for the past twenty years and that still continues to attract much attention. The book is at the level at which a graduate student who has studied condensed matter physics can begin to comprehend the nature of phase transitions, which involve the transformation of one state of matter into another. (A simple example is the melting of a solid to become a liquid.) Such a transformation is termed 'critical' when, after a certain amount of the substance changes phase, the entire bulk virtually instantaneously also makes the transition. A second, updated edition is planned for future publication, but in the mean time this paperback reissue will be useful in teaching the fundamental principles of this extremely interesting subject.

Classical Spin-Glass Model
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple model of a spin-glass with weakly correlated disorder is presented, which includes both randomness and frustration, and is exactly soluble, but its solution can be obtained without replicas.

Cavity QED with Quantum Gases: New Paradigms in Many-Body Physics
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the recent developments and the current status in the field of quantum-gas cavity QEDs, starting from an introduction to basic models, and pedagogically summarize a broad range of theoretical developments and put them in perspective with the current and near future state-of-the-art experiments.

Is Weak Emergence Just in the Mind
TL;DR: A version of weak emergence based on the notion of explanatory incompressibility and “crawling the causal web” is explained, seen to involve a distinctive kind of complex, macro-pattern in the mind-independent objective micro-causal structure that exists in nature.

Critical behavior of the six-state clock model in two dimensions
TL;DR: An intermediate XY-like phase between a low-temperature ordered phase and a high-tem temperature disordered phase is found in the q=6 clock (vector Potts) model in two dimensions through Monte Carlo simulations.

Magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior near the paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase transition temperature in TbCo 2 − x Fe x
TL;DR: In this article, a critical exponent analysis of the magnetic phase transition was performed to investigate the nature of the paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase transition, and the derived values of critical exponents represent the phenomenological universal curve for the field dependence of ε-ensuremath{-S}_{M}, indicating that TbCo belongs to the three-dimensional Heisenberg class with short-range interaction, while on Fe substitution it tends towards mean field with long-range interactions.
