Abstract: This is a paperback edition of a distinguished book, originally published by Clarendon Press in 1971. It was then the first text on critical phenomena, a field that has enjoyed great activity for the past twenty years and that still continues to attract much attention. The book is at the level at which a graduate student who has studied condensed matter physics can begin to comprehend the nature of phase transitions, which involve the transformation of one state of matter into another. (A simple example is the melting of a solid to become a liquid.) Such a transformation is termed 'critical' when, after a certain amount of the substance changes phase, the entire bulk virtually instantaneously also makes the transition. A second, updated edition is planned for future publication, but in the mean time this paperback reissue will be useful in teaching the fundamental principles of this extremely interesting subject.

Chapter 19 Europium chalcogenides: EuO, EuS, EuSe and EuTe
TL;DR: Emphasis is on the new developments in the seventies and well established experiments and theories on the Eu chalcogenides discussed in the chapter, concerned with the electrical transport properties of anion and cation substituted materials.

Mean-field theory of statistical assemblies of sterically interacting lines
TL;DR: In this article, the authors considered statistical assemblies of lines on simple cubic lattices and derived a mean-field ansatz strictly valid only for d > 4, which can be applied to thermally equilibrated polymers and defect models of phase transitions.

Phase transition and scaling behavior of topological charged black holes in Horava-Lifshitz gravity
TL;DR: In this article, the phase transition of the static, spherically symmetric charged black hole solution with arbitrary scalar curvature was investigated based on the ordinary thermodynamics, and the critical point of second order phase transition was obtained by the divergence of the heat capacity at constant charge.

Dynamical critical behavior of isotropic ferromagnets
TL;DR: In this paper, a review of recent hyperfine interaction experiments on isotropic ferromagnets is presented, with the exception of Co, pure Heisenberg behavior is not observed in any of the materials surveyed.

Scientific misrepresentation and guides to ontology: the need for representational code and contents
TL;DR: This paper shows how certain requirements must be set on any tenable account of scientific representation, such as the requirement allowing for misrepresentation, and proposes to take epistemic representations to be intentional objects that come with reference, semantic contents and a representational code.
