Abstract: This book provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. It explores contemporary topics of climate dynamics and equatorial dynamics including the Greenhouse Effect, global warming, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. It combines both physical and numerical aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics into a single affordable volume. It explores contemporary topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, global warming and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. Biographical and historical notes at the ends of chapters trace the intellectual development of the field. This title is written by recipient of the 2010 Wernaers Prize, awarded each year by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNR-FNRS).

Exact azimuthal equatorially trapped waves with centripetal force in modified equatorial $$\beta $$ β -plane approximation and at arbitrary latitude
TL;DR: In this article, the Lagrangian azimuthal equatorially trapped waves propagating eastward in a stratified rotational fluid were modeled as Coriolis and centripetal terms.

Submesoscale dynamics in the open ocean
Liam Brannigan
- 01 Jan 2015
TL;DR: In this article, the seasonal cycle of submesoscale flows in the upper ocean is investigated through a series of numerical simulations in an idealised model domain, and the role of flow curvature is considered and it is shown that the angular velocity of mesoscale eddies, as well as relative vorticity, contributes to their stability.
Physics-Informed Statistical Modeling for Wildfire Aerosols Process Using Multi-Source Geostationary Satellite Remote-Sensing Data Streams
Guan Wei,Venkat Krishnan,Yu Xie,Manajit Sengupta,Yingchen Zhang,H. Liao,Xiao Liu +6 more
- 23 Jun 2022
TL;DR: In this paper , a physics-informed statistical approach for modeling wild-scale AOD propagation by simultaneously utilizing, or fusing, multi-source heterogeneous satellite remote-sensing data streams is proposed.
Localized General Vertical Coordinates for Quasi‐Eulerian Ocean Models: The Nordic Overflows Test‐Case
Diego Bruciaferri,Catherine Guiavarc’h,Helene T. Hewitt,James Harle,Mattia Almansi,Pierre Mathiot,Pedro Colombo +6 more
TL;DR: A methodology to localize general vertical coordinates in quasi-Eulerian ocean models is presented. It improves the representation of the Nordic Seas overflows by reducing spurious diapycnal mixing and reproducing observed properties of the overflows.

A Conservation Law Method in Optimization
TL;DR: The algorithms simulate the Newton Second Law without friction based on symplectic Euler scheme and the intuitive analysis of analytical solution gives a theoretical analysis for the high-speed convergence in the algorithm proposed.

Deterministic nonperiodic flow
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that nonperiodic solutions are ordinarily unstable with respect to small modifications, so that slightly differing initial states can evolve into considerably different states, and systems with bounded solutions are shown to possess bounded numerical solutions.
An algorithm for the machine calculation of complex Fourier series
J.W. Cooley,John W. Tukey +1 more
TL;DR: Good generalized these methods and gave elegant algorithms for which one class of applications is the calculation of Fourier series, applicable to certain problems in which one must multiply an N-vector by an N X N matrix which can be factored into m sparse matrices.

Development of a turbulence closure model for geophysical fluid problems
George L. Mellor,Tetsuji Yamada +1 more
TL;DR: The second-moment turbulent closure hypothesis has been applied to geophysical fluid problems since 1973, when genuine predictive skill in coping with the effects of stratification was demonstrated as discussed by the authors.

Some simple solutions for heat-induced tropical circulation.
TL;DR: In this article, a simple analytic model is constructed to elucidate some basic features of the response of the tropical atmosphere to diabatic heating, showing that there is considerable east-west asymmetry which can be illustrated by solutions for heating concentrated in an area of finite extent.
