Abstract: This paper describes considerations for potential future public data communication services interconnecting users on private local area networks belonging to different administrative domains. The relevant management issues are addressed in an architecture consisting of distributed software modules organized in a hierarchical structure supporting network administration functions. The authors describe an experimental internetworking unit being built to explore the functional capabilities needed to interface ethernet networks to systems operating at OC-3 SONET/SDH rates of 155.22 Mb/s with basic asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport capabilities. They describe bandwidth allocation, address screening, address translation, and traffic monitoring service aspects in the experimental prototype. >

Internet protocol filter
Bruce Anthony Wootton,William G. Colvin +1 more
- 23 Apr 1997
TL;DR: The IP filter as discussed by the authors is a communications device designed to provide public network or Internet access to nodes of private networks, advantageously without requiring the private nodes on such networks to register public Internet addresses.

Service negotiation among network management entities
TL;DR: This paper uses a service model as an alternative to an open system network model to deal with networks composed of several diverse subnetworks to facilitate the automation of service functions such as negotiation, provisioning, activation and operation.

A signaling protocol for complex multimedia services
TL;DR: A signaling protocol for user applications that invokes multimedia services provided by the EXPANSE research prototype, a broadband ISDN testbed, and a generic framework that flexibly accommodates a wide variety of services involving multiple parties with heterogeneous terminals is described.

Networking of networks: interworking according to OSI
F.M. Burg,N. Di Iorio +1 more
TL;DR: The formal method of interworking networks in accordance with the overall open systems interconnection (OSI) effort being pursued by both the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT) is described.
