Abstract: In the work described in this paper, we are addressing the question of how to support the designer with appropriate knowledge during conceptual design. An important aim is to provide that knowledge support to the designer as the design activity proceeds. The knowledge is used to enable the exploration of possible design solutions by the provision of generative and evaluative capabilities in the system. These requirements have been demonstrated in an architecture and a support system that applies to the task of vehicle design.

Designing collaborative environments for strategic knowledge in design

TL;DR: It is argued that the support of learning of strategic knowledge in collaborative design by computer-mediated means must be based upon empirical evidence about the nature of learning and design practice in the real world.

A compositional approach to modelling design rationale
TL;DR: A generic task model of design has been developed that clearly specifies the role of design history and design rationale within the design process, and provides a structure to distinguish different types of design rationale, according to the functional role they play in thedesign process.

Intuitive and objective processes in automotive design
TL;DR: The characteristics and specialist responsibilities which distinguish industrial designers from engineering designers are most strongly evident in the automobile industry as mentioned in this paper, and car stylists use intuitive processes, and private form and graphic languages.
