Abstract: Acute and chronic inflammation is associated with changes in microvascular form and function At rest, endothelial cells maintain a nonthrombogenic, nonreactive surface at the interface between blood and tissue However, on activation by proinflammatory mediators, the endothelium becomes a major participant in the generation of the inflammatory response These functions of endothelium are modified by the other cell populations of the microvessel wall, namely pericytes, and smooth muscle cells This article reviews recent advances in understanding the roles played by microvessels in inflammation

Retinal microvascular abnormalities in major depression.
Evgenii Sadykov,Ladislav Hosák,Alexandr Stepanov,Jana Zapletalová,Jan Studnička +4 more
- 17 Jul 2023
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors found significant microvascular changes in the retina in patients with depressive disorder in comparison to the control group of mentally healthy subjects, with significantly larger arteriolar (P < 0.0001) as well as venular (P< 0.001-0.0002) calibres in major depression.

Immune Response and Tissue Damage
Jürgen Arnhold
- 01 Jan 2020
TL;DR: Basic mechanisms of innate and acquired immunity are described in this chapter, with special attention on pattern recognition receptors and their ligands, deactivation of microbes by immune cells, the interplay between neutrophils and macrophages, and damaging of host's tissues byimmune cells.
Repositioning the Early Pathology of Type 1 Diabetes to the Extraislet Vasculature.

TL;DR: The initiation and progression of anti-islet immunity in type 1 diabetes require islet neolymphangiogenesis to allow T cell access to the islet.

Nitric oxide synthases: regulation and function.
TL;DR: Nitric oxide (NO), the smallest signalling molecule known, is produced by three isoforms of NO synthase (NOS), which can be expressed in many cell types in response to lipopolysaccharide, cytokines, or other agents.
