TL;DR: Although a variety of approaches have been used to alleviate the problem of drought, plant breeding seems to be an efficient and economic means of tailoring crops to enable them to grow successfully in drought-prone environments.
Combining abilities of grain yield and yield related traits in relation to drought tolerance in temperate maize breeding
TL;DR: The results suggest that tropical drought tolerant germplasm is likely to have high utility in temperate maize breeding programs, and specific combining ability analysis revealed that tropical x temperate hybrids had higher values compared to tropical x tropical hybrids.

Effects of exogenous nitric oxide on glycinebetaine metabolism in maize (zea mays l.) seedlings under drought stress
TL;DR: Results demonstrate that GB metabolism in drought stressed maize plants was significantly enhanced by exogenous NO application, and the accumulation of greater level of NO in maize seedlings contributed to increase GB accumulation by regulating BADH activity and choline content.

Physiological role of thiamine and weed control treatments on faba bean and associated weeds grown under salt affected soil
TL;DR: Foliar treatment of faba bean plants with thiamine different concentrations could alleviate the harmful effects of different salinity levels and results indicated that free amino and proline works to increase faba beans ability to withstand salinity stress.
Role of Molecular Breeding Tools in Enhancing the Breeding of Drought-Resilient Cotton Genotypes: An Updated Review
TL;DR: A detailed overview of molecular tools, their application for improving drought tolerance in cotton, and their prospects is presented in this paper , which will help future researchers to conduct further studies to develop drought-tolerant cotton genotypes that can thrive under conditions of water scarcity.

Human biochemical genetics
TL;DR: For the next few weeks the course is going to be exploring a field that’s actually older than classical population genetics, although the approach it’ll be taking to it involves the use of population genetic machinery.

Roles of glycine betaine and proline in improving plant abiotic stress resistance
Muhammad Ashraf,Majid R. Foolad +1 more
TL;DR: In this review article, numerous examples of successful application of these compounds to improve plant stress tolerance are presented and a better understanding of the mechanisms of action of exogenously applied GB and proline is expected to aid their effective utilization in crop production in stress environments.

Two transcription factors, DREB1 and DREB2, with an EREBP/AP2 DNA binding domain separate two cellular signal transduction pathways in drought- and low-temperature-responsive gene expression, respectively, in Arabidopsis.
Qiang Liu,Mie Kasuga,Yoh Sakuma,Hiroshi Abe,Setsuko Miura,Kazuko Yamaguchi-Shinozaki,Kazuo Shinozaki +6 more
TL;DR: Overexpression of the DREB1A cDNA in transgenic Arabidopsis plants not only induced strong expression of the target genes under unstressed conditions but also caused dwarfed phenotypes in the transgenic plants, and revealed freezing and dehydration tolerance.
Drought and Salt Tolerance in Plants
TL;DR: The responses of plants to salt and water stress are described, the regulatory circuits which allow plants to cope with stress are presented, and how the present knowledge can be applied to obtain tolerant plants is discussed.
