Abstract: The need for contextually rich educational experiences in construction education has led researchers to explore alternatives using gaming and simulation environments. The work done so far has concentrated on special and general purpose simulations of construction operations with limited interactivity. We claim that it is necessary to have an extensible general purpose framework, for developing a wide variety of situational simulations of construction management processes, that can be used to create interactive environments for training managers. We have introduced such a framework and developed it using multiple autonomous agents. The Virtual Coach is an implementation of the developed framework. It was tested on a class of 19 construction management senior students, and proved to be an useful educational tool.

Simulation and gaming in construction business: design of a module-oriented modeling approach based on system dynamics and its prototypical implementation in research and education
Christian K. Karl
- 13 Mar 2015
TL;DR: The aim of this research project is the development and practical testing of a module-oriented modeling approach, which can be used both in the simulation of multi-causal and dynamic relationships on different levels of the construction industry and in educational games employed in academic and further education.

Determination of process durations on virtual construction sites
Hans-Joachim Bargstädt,Arno Blickling +1 more
- 04 Dec 2005
TL;DR: A prototype for determination of process durations developed at the Bauhaus University Weimar is presented and shows the method of process cost determination on a high level of detail (game between excavator and truck) through interaction with the virtual environment of the site.
Developing Construction Management Events in Situational Simulations
TL;DR: This article explores the development of simulation events where simulation variables are changed due to an event, and then the player is challenged to interact with the simulation by making decisions that impact the project outcome.

Intelligent Agents: Theory and Practice
TL;DR: Agent theory is concerned with the question of what an agent is, and the use of mathematical formalisms for representing and reasoning about the properties of agents as discussed by the authors ; agent architectures can be thought of as software engineering models of agents; and agent languages are software systems for programming and experimenting with agents.

General-purpose systems for effective construction simulation
TL;DR: The characteristics of these systems illustrate that an effective general-purpose simulation tool for construction is in essence one based on extended forms of activity cycle diagrams and the activity scanning modeling paradigm, which are indeed the most convenient and intuitive for construction simulation systems.

Learning in Artificial Environments: Embodiment, Embeddedness and Dynamic Adaptation
William Winn
- 01 Jan 2003
TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a conceptual framework for studying learning in artificial environments, which assumes that cognition is embodied in physical activity, that this activity is embedded in a learning environment, and that learning is the result of adaptation of the learner to the environment.
