Immune function in the elderly.
19
TL;DR: Although there can be elevations in immunoprotein levels, antibody formation is decreased in most elderly individuals and response to immunization varies greatly in the aged.

Abstract: PreviewNormal aging is accompanied by diverse alterations in immune function, which can be associated with illness. Assessment of the immune status in an elderly patient should be based on a thorough history and physical examination rather than laboratory testing. Antibody responses to vaccines are often blunted in the elderly, thus limiting the effectiveness of immunization in this age-group. The authors address these issues and others that are being investigated, such as enhancing immunity by the supplementation of nutrients and hormones and the use of immunoadjuvants.

Renal transplantation for patients 60 years of age or older: A single-institution experience
Enrico Benedetti,Arthur J. Matas,N. S. Hakim,Carlos G. Fasola,Kristen J. Gillingham,Lois McHugh,John S. Najarian +6 more
TL;DR: Renal transplantation is successful for recipients 60 years of age or older and post-transplant quality of life is excellent, and extrarenal disease was not an important predictor of outcome and should not be used as an exclusion criterion.

Effects of endurance training on selected parameters of immune function in elderly women.
TL;DR: Ten weeks of endurance training resulted in a significant decrease in both the 1-mile walk time and the post-walk heart rate in the exercisers but not the controls, without resulting in either an acute or chronic suppression of immune function.

The preference and importance of bathing, toileting and mouth care habits in older persons.
TL;DR: Although order of importance of items was similar across genders, women assigned higher levels of importance to these items than did men, and atypical habits, such as unusually long or more than 1 bath/day, were higher than those attributed to more usual habits.

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of anti-tetanus toxoid antibody response in the elderly. Humoral immune response enhancement by thymostimulin.
Umberto Fagiolo,Alberto Amadori,R Biselli,Roberto Paganelli,R. Nisini,Emanuele Cozzi,Rita Zamarchi,Raffaele D'Amelio +7 more
TL;DR: The humoral primary and secondary response to tetanus toxoid (TT) and the possible immunopotentiating effect of the thymic hormone thymostimulin are explored, and spectrotypic analysis of anti-TT antibodies performed by isoelectric focusing and reverse blotting showed total agreement with the results from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

The influence of obesity on the effects of spirulina supplementation in the human metabolic response of Korean elderly.
Hee Jung Park,Hyun Sook Lee +1 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that blood lipid lowering and immune and antioxidant improving response for spirulina supplement was affected by obesity in Korean elderly.

Beneficial effects of oral zinc supplementation on the immune response of old people
TL;DR: The data suggest that the addition of zinc to the diet of old persons could be an effective and simple way to improve their immune function.

Assessment of the Antibody Response to Pneumococcal Vaccine in High-Risk Populations
TL;DR: Patients with a documented high risk of acquiring pneumococcal disease include the elderly, especially those with underlying cardiopulmonary disease, and those with sickle cell anemia, Hodgkin's disease, a renal transplant, multiple myeloma, asplenia, and nephrotic syndrome.

Infectious diseases in the elderly.
TL;DR: Although the increased susceptibility of older persons to infectious diseases frequently has been attributed to the decline in immune function that occurs with aging, there are very few data confirming this hypothesis and additional research is clearly needed on other contributory factors.

Review of Biological Research in Aging
TL;DR: From 1964 to 1972, Academic Press Inc published a series of books entitled Advances in Gerontological Research , edited by Bernard Strehler, which periodically reviewed the progress in biomedical gerontology, and Review of Biological Research in Aging , volume 1, admirably fills this gap.

Antitoxin responses in the elderly to tetanus-diphtheria (td) immunization
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that many elderly persons lack protection against tetanus and diphtheria and document that two doses of Td toxoid would confer immunity to virtually all such persons.
