Abstract: A system for imaging an object is provided. The system includes a light source configured to emit light having a predetermined wavelength towards the object. The system further includes a metalens including a metallic film having a plurality of slits defined therethrough, the plurality of slits having a width a and a periodicity d that are both less than the predetermined wavelength, wherein the object is positioned between the light source and the metalens. The system further includes a detector configured to acquire measurements indicative of light transmitted through the metalens, and a computing device communicatively coupled to the detector and configured to reconstruct an image of the object based on the acquired measurements.

Ultralow-threshold Raman laser using a spherical dielectric microcavity
TL;DR: This work demonstrates a micrometre-scale, nonlinear Raman source that has a highly efficient pump–signal conversion (higher than 35%) and pump thresholds nearly 1,000 times lower than shown before, which represents a route to compact, ultralow-threshold sources for numerous wavelength bands that are usually difficult to access.
Experimental demonstration of guiding and confining light in nanometer-size low-refractive-index material.
TL;DR: A novel silicon waveguide structure for guiding and confining light in nanometer-wide low-refractive-index material is experimentally demonstrated and it is shown that the structure can be implemented in highly integrated photonics.
Homogenization of metamaterials by field averaging (invited paper)
David R. Smith,John B. Pendry +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a homogenization technique in which macroscopic fields are determined via averaging the local fields obtained from a full-wave electromagnetic simulation or analytical calculation.

Mechanism for designing metallic metamaterials with a high index of refraction.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce a mechanism for creating artificial high refractive index metamaterials by exploiting the existence of subwavelength propagating modes in metallic systems, which can be made arbitrarily large.
Optimal bistable switching in non-linear photonic crystals
TL;DR: An optical bi-stable switch includes a photonic crystal cavity structure, which is used to characterize a bi-stable switch so that optimal control is provided over input and output of the switch as mentioned in this paper.
