Abstract: An image is divided into blocks and coded by matching each block with a pattern having either a single region, or two or more regions defined by internal edges. The coded value of the block includes a pattern identifier, and a single pixel value for each region in the matching pattern. The coded image is decoded by constructing blocks divided into regions according to the pattern identifiers, and filling each region with the given single pixel value. The decoded blocks may be the same size as the blocks in the original image, or smaller, in which case the decoded image is reduced, or larger, in which case the decoded image is enlarged.

Image processing apparatus, method, and program product to perform color-reduction processing for a block
Hirokazu Tamura
- 09 Mar 2011
TL;DR: In this paper, an image processing apparatus comprises: means for performing color reduction processing for a block, means for comparing color data of respective pixels in the block, and means for controlling to execute color-reduction processing, for second image data formed from the first color data output, upon determining blocks each including a predetermined number of pixels as blocks to be processed, thereby further controlling to re-execute, for the block having undergone the color reduction, processing by each means.

Method and apparatus for selecting blocks of image data from image data having both horizontally- and vertically-oriented blocks
Shin-Ywan Wang
- 22 Dec 1993
TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for selecting text and/or non-text blocks in a stored document includes functions and structure for identifying connected pixel components in stored documents, separating the identified pixel components into text and nontext components, searching the document for visible and invisible lines along edges of the non-Text components, forming irregularly-shaped text andnon-Text blocks using the identified text components and the visible or invisible lines, detecting the text orientation for each formed text block, extracting text lines from the text block based on the detected orientation, and modifying the formed text
