Abstract: Shear thickening is a widespread phenomenon in suspension flow that, despite sustained study, is still the subject of much debate. The longstanding view that shear thickening is due to hydrodynamic clusters has been challenged by recent theory and simulations suggesting that contact forces dominate, not only in discontinuous, but also in continuous shear thickening. Here, we settle this dispute using shear reversal experiments on micron-sized silica and latex particles to measure directly the hydrodynamic and contact force contributions to shear thickening. We find that contact forces dominate even continuous shear thickening. Computer simulations show that these forces most likely arise from frictional interactions.

Oscillatory shear flows of dense suspensions at imposed pressure: Rheology and micro-structure
Junhao Dong,Martin Trulsson +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied oscillatory shear flows of a two-dimensional suspensions using a normal pressure-controlled set-up and introduced a complex macroscopic friction coefficient to characterize the rheology and microstructure of dense suspensions.

Altering and eliminating irreversible shear thickening of fumed silica slurries using spherical silica
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the shear thickening behavior in colloidal dispersions at a wide range of shear rates and concentrations and found that shear-thickening behavior depends strongly on the silica concentration.

Directional shear jamming of frictionless ellipses.
TL;DR: In this article, a new fragility appears for frictionless ellipses in the flowing states, where particles can flow indefinitely in one direction at applied shear stresses but shear jam in the other direction upon shear stress reversal.

The rheology of slurries of athermal cohesive micro-particles immersed in fluid: A computational and experimental comparison
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple shear of two cementitious slurries composed of Portland cement and fly ash particles is compared with steady-state vane rheometer experiments, showing the emergence of percolating clusters, responsible for the rheology.

Rhéoépaississement des suspensions denses : mise en évidence de la transition frictionnelle
Cécile Clavaud
- 10 Jul 2018
TL;DR: Le rheoepaississement is un phenomene spectaculaire apparaissant dans certaines suspensions concentrees en particules as mentioned in this paper, and it provient d'une transition frictionnelle due to the presence of a force repulsive entre les grains.

A discrete numerical model for granular assemblies
Peter Cundall,Otto D. L. Strack +1 more
TL;DR: The distinct element method as mentioned in this paper is a numerical model capable of describing the mechanical behavior of assemblies of discs and spheres and is based on the use of an explicit numerical scheme in which the interaction of the particles is monitored contact by contact and the motion of the objects modelled particle by particle.

Colloidal Suspension Rheology
Jan Mewis,Norman J. Wagner +1 more
- 01 Nov 2011
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce colloid science and rheology, and present an overview of colloid physics and its applications in viscoelastic media. But they do not discuss the role of non-spherical particles.
