Abstract: Das Humane Immundefizienzvirus (Lentivirus) gehört zu den Retroviren. Diese haben eine Replikationsstrategie, die das Umschreiben der genomischen viralen RNA in eine komplementäre Doppelstrang-DNA beinhaltet. Diese CDNA wird in das Gewebe der Wirtszelle integriert, der als Provirus bezeichnet wird. (1) HIV 1 und HIV 2 lösen beim Menschen – unbehandelt – eine tödlich verlaufende Immundefizienz aus (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrom, AIDS). HIV 1 hat eine Pandemie ausgelöst. In den Ländern des afrikanischen Kontinents und in Südostasien leben 85% aller HIV-infizierten Menschen. HIV 2 ist im Wesentlichen auf die Region Westafrikas beschränkt.
