HLA and Infectious Diseases

TL;DR: A review looks afresh at the evidence supporting a role for classical HLA loci in susceptibility to infectious disease, examines the limitations of data reported to date, and discusses current advances in methodology and technology that will potentially lead to greater understanding of their role in infectious diseases in the future.

Abstract: Following their discovery in the early 1970s, classical human leukocyte antigen (HLA) loci have been the prototypical candidates for genetic susceptibility to infectious disease. Indeed, the original hypothesis for the extreme variability observed at HLA loci (H-2 in mice) was the major selective pressure from infectious diseases. Now that both the human genome and the molecular basis of innate and acquired immunity are understood in greater detail, do the classical HLA loci still stand out as major genes that determine susceptibility to infectious disease? This review looks afresh at the evidence supporting a role for classical HLA loci in susceptibility to infectious disease, examines the limitations of data reported to date, and discusses current advances in methodology and technology that will potentially lead to greater understanding of their role in infectious diseases in the future.

- 01 Aug 2021
TL;DR: In this article, the authors found that BoLA-DRB3 heterozygous status was significantly associated with lymphoma resistance irrespective of cattle breeds (p < 0.0001) and decreased proviral load (PVL) for Holstein cows; p = 0.0407 for Japanese Black cattle.

TL;DR: The aim of this work is to report genetic factors of SARS-CoV-2 and host-associated to severe COVID-19, placing special emphasis on the viral entry and molecules of the immune system involved with viral infection.
Usefulness of the New Hematological Parameter: Reactive Lymphocytes RE-LYMP with Flow Cytometry Markers of Inflammation in COVID-19.
Elżbieta Rutkowska,Iwona Kwiecień,Katarzyna Kulik,Beata Chełstowska,Krzysztof Kłos,Piotr Rzepecki,Andrzej Chciałowski +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the reactive lymphocytes (RE-LYMP) parameter was evaluated in COVID-19 and correlated with activation lymphocytes markers by flow cytometry. And the analysis of the RE-LIMP together with flow cytometric activation markers can be helpful in identifying and distinguishing patients with COVID19(+) from other viruses and healthy donors.

TL;DR: This study has demonstrated that careful use of a shared control group represents a safe and effective approach to GWA analyses of multiple disease phenotypes; generated a genome-wide genotype database for future studies of common diseases in the British population; and shown that, provided individuals with non-European ancestry are excluded, the extent of population stratification in theBritish population is generally modest.
