Abstract: It was in 1526 that von Willebrand published his first description of a familial haemorrhagic diathesis, occurring in both sexes and characterised by a prolonged bleeding time despite normal platelet count. He called the disease hereditary pseudohaemophilia. His report included a survey of 19 previously published cases with a similar clinical picture. The earliest case that he could trace was one presented by Kehrer as early as 1876.
