Abstract: Cephalopods such as octopuses have a combination of a stretchable skin and color-tuning organs to control both posture and color for visual communication and disguise. We present an electroluminescent material that is capable of large uniaxial stretching and surface area changes while actively emitting light. Layers of transparent hydrogel electrodes sandwich a ZnS phosphor-doped dielectric elastomer layer, creating thin rubber sheets that change illuminance and capacitance under deformation. Arrays of individually controllable pixels in thin rubber sheets were fabricated using replica molding and were subjected to stretching, folding, and rolling to demonstrate their use as stretchable displays. These sheets were then integrated into the skin of a soft robot, providing it with dynamic coloration and sensory feedback from external and internal stimuli.

Highly transparent and stretchable organic light-emitting diodes with ultrathin metal films as double electrodes
30 Jan 2023
TL;DR: Li et al. as discussed by the authors used ultrathin metal films as both anode and cathode to fabricate stretchable TrOLEDs based on a wrinkling strategy, which achieved a transmittance value of 73% at 550 nm and a negligible micro-cavity effect with near Lambertian emission characteristics at a wide angle of view.

Strain-ultrasensitive surface wrinkles for visual wearable optical sensor
28 Feb 2022
TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors demonstrated a new and feasible strategy for wearable optical sensors based on surface wrinkles ultrasensitive to strain using a bilayer wrinkling system, in which the sensing mechanism is different from that of the traditional electrical sensors.

TL;DR: The synthesis of hydrogels from polymers forming ionically and covalently crosslinked networks is reported, finding that these gels’ toughness is attributed to the synergy of two mechanisms: crack bridging by the network of covalent crosslinks, and hysteresis by unzipping thenetwork of ionic crosslinks.
