Abstract: High profile nurses have launched a new organisation and will meet with health minister Dan Poulter to call for minimum registered nurse staffing levels to protect patient safety. Safe and Sound – the Safe Staffing Alliance, which has published five ‘New Year wishes’ for nursing, will urge the minister to view registered nurse-to-patient ratios as an indicator equal in importance to surgeons’ mortality rates. The launch of the alliance has been timed to coincide with the forthcoming Francis report into failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. The alliance comprises key nursing organisations such as the RCN, Unison and the Florence Nightingale Foundation, along with nurse leaders including Elaine Inglesby, nurse director at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and member of the prime minister’s nursing and care quality forum. As part of the Care campaign, run jointly by Nursing Standard and the Patients Association, the alliance held a roundtable meeting before Christmas to thrash out its aims.
