Abstract: Head/dependent marking is a typological parameter based on whether the morphosyntactic marking of grammatical relations is located on the head or the nonhead of the phrase. Phrases and whole languages can be described accordingly as head-marking, dependent-marking, double-marking, and without marking; there are also split and minor types. Crossphrasal harmony of marking type is moderately favored. There are some universal preferences as to marking types of certain phrase types and lexical categories. Head/dependent marking has interesting large-scale geographical variation and fairly good diachronic stability.
