Abstract: One of the core activities in PrimeLife is the desi gn and implementation of privacy-enhancing identity management systems and applications that a re usable. Therefore it is one of the goals of PrimeLife Activity 4 to create an extensive HCI (Hu man Computer Interaction) pattern collection to provide guidelines on how to design usable user interfaces for privacy-enhancing systems and applications. The HCI Pattern Collection ‐ Version 2 presented in this Deliverable provides HCI patterns developed within the first two project yea rs, which should guide all PrimeLife activities that are developing user interfaces. The HCI patter ns are structured into patterns related to privacy policies management and display, patterns for the v isualisation of privacy information, patterns related to workflows and interaction paradigms as w ell as descriptions of interactive PET mockups.

CryptSDLC: Embedding Cryptographic Engineering into Secure Software Development Lifecycle
Thomas Loruenser,Henrich C. Pöhls,Leon Sell,Thomas Laenger +3 more
- 27 Aug 2018
TL;DR: This work presents a system architecture providing a practical abstraction for the many specialists involved in such a development process, plus a suitable cryptographic software development life cycle methodology on top of the architecture, and concludes with an assessment of the use of the Cryptographic Software Design Life Cycle in a EU research project.

Julio C. Caiza,Jose M. Del Alamo,Danny S. Guamán,Angel Jaramillo-Alcázar +3 more
- 22 Mar 2021
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe an exploratory experiment carried out to analyze the improvement that 12 privacy patterns (for anonymity) bring to the completeness of the design product, and make an in-depth analysis based on the learnings obtained during the experiment realization.

The Wicked Problem of Privacy : Design Challenge for Crypto-based Solutions
Ala Sarah Alaqra
- 01 Jan 2018
TL;DR: Data privacy has been growing in importance in recent years, especially with the continuous increase of online activity, and researchers study, design, and develop solutions aimed at enhancing users’ privacy.
Enhancing Privacy Notice Applications through Interaction Design
Enrique Sanchez Lara,Sandra R. Murillo,J. Alfredo Sánchez +2 more
- 27 Apr 2016
TL;DR: This paper proposes the application of interaction patterns to develop software about privacy notices that include the three requirements involved: compliance with legal terms, systems development with a sustainable cost and usability for the end user.

Users are not the enemy
Anne Adams,Martina Angela Sasse +1 more
TL;DR: It is argued that to change this state of affairs, security departments need to communicate more with users, and adopt a usercentered design approach.

Transforming the 'Weakest Link' - A Human-Computer Interaction Approach to Usable and Effective Security
Martina Angela Sasse,Sacha Brostoff,D. Weirich +2 more
- 01 Jan 2002
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that simply blaming users will not lead to more effective security systems and present examples of how undesirable user behaviour with passwords can be caused by failure to recognise the characteristics of human memory, unattainable or conflicting task demands, and lack of support, training and motivation.

The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems
Jef Raskin
- 01 Jan 2000
TL;DR: This unique guide to interactive system design reflects the experience and vision of Jef Raskin, the creator of the Apple Macintosh, and demonstrates that many current interface paradigms are dead ends, and that to make computers significantly easier to use requires new approaches.
