Abstract: History is not a prerogative of the human species, Edward O. Wilson declares in Half-Earth. Demonstrating that we blindly ignore the histories of millions of other species, Wilson warns us that a point of no return is imminent. Refusing to believe that our extinction is predetermined, Wilson has written Half-Earth as a cri de coeur, proposing that the only solution to our impending "Sixth Extinction" is to increase the area of natural reserves to half the surface of the earth. Half-Earth is a resounding conclusion to the best-selling trilogy begun by the "splendid" (Financial Times) The Social Conquest of Earth (ISBN 978 0 87140 363 6) and "engaging and highly readable" (Times Higher Education) The Meaning of Human Existence (ISBN 978 0 87140 100 7).

The Common Landscape: A Case for Using Participatory Strategies to Improve Management of the Blue Ridge Parkway Viewshed
Anthony Thomas Piacenza
- 31 Aug 2018
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate whether the National Park Service's management of the Blue Ridge Parkway is fulfilling both its own mandates and its promise to adjacent communities outside the park's borders, and find that regional land-use trends are putting at risk the key resource which sustains the Parkway and related tourism activity.

TL;DR: In this article , the Smithsonian Working Land and Seascapes initiative is used as a case study to examine what human dimensions topics are key to improving our understanding and how this knowledge can inform conservation in working landscapes and seascapes.

The tragedy of modern economic growth: A call to business to radically change its purpose and practices
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose that the concrete ecological principles underlying Earth's life-restorative natural ecosystems provide a much more appropriate language to guide a sustainable human economy than the abstract language of accounting and finance.

Population limitation in migrants
TL;DR: Although in the last 30–40 years the numbers of some tropical wintering birds have declined in western Europe and others in eastern North America, the causes seem to differ, and numerical declines have affected many species that breed and winter in forest, especially those eastern species favouring the forest interior.

Molecular phylogenetics and the historical biogeography of dippers (Cinclus)
TL;DR: Dating of species divergences suggest that dippers arose approximately 4 mya, and achieved their present continental distributions soon after, with subsequent movement into the New World.

A review of the likely causal pathways relating the reduced density of breeding dippers Cinclus cinclus to the acidification of upland streams
TL;DR: None of these features can exclude the possibilities that acidic streams either hold populations of poor quality birds, which show the above features, or that acidity affects the breeding ecology of all dippers that attempt to breed at low pH.

The breeding biology and population history of the Dipper Cinclus cinclus on a Scottish river system
TL;DR: The Dipper population of the Esk river system, Lothian, Scotland, has been surveyed at intervals over a period of 60 years up to the present day, with detailed population surveys and studies of breeding biology taking place between 1979 and 1991.
