Abstract: Geographical concepts – landscape, region, space, place, and territory – are important tools to analyze the social reality, in concrete contexts and means to act in situations in the reality in which we live. Because they express the way in which society is analyzed, that is, the theoretical approaches that confer identity and autonomy on Geography within the social sciences, these concepts have been the object of wide debate both internal and external to Geography. Through exploratory research and literature review, this article outlines the historical trajectory of the concept "territory", presenting its various conceptions linked to different currents of geographic thought until the present day, when this concept has returned significantly with its increasing use, not only by Geography but also in various branches of the human sciences. The intention is to subsidize the understanding of the logical-historical development of the concept "territory", as a possibility for the understanding of conceptual conflicts that allow advancing in the construction of knowledge, offering relevant clues and indications for the critical understanding of the history of geographic concepts.
