Abstract: Die Entzauberung der Welt durch die Aufklarung sowie der Positivismus in Frankreich begunstigten die Weiterentwicklung der phantastischen Literatur im Frankreich des 19. Jh.s und die Herausbildung einer spezifischen Tradition des phantastischen Erzahlens, fur die sich der Terminus conte fantastique einburgerte. Die historischen und denkgeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen dieser Erzahltradition, ihre Reichweite und ihre thematischen Praferenzen werden im Folgenden dargestellt.
