Abstract: A data transmission system and method for processing speech, image and other data disclosed which embodies parallel- and serial-generalized Viterbi decoding algorithms (GVA) that produce a rank ordered list of the L best candidates after a trellis search. Error detection is performed by identifying unreliable sequences through comparison of the likelihood metrics of the two or more most likely sequences. Unreliable sequences are re-estimated using inter-frame redundancy or retransmission.

Error bounds for convolutional codes and an asymptotically optimum decoding algorithm
TL;DR: The upper bound is obtained for a specific probabilistic nonsequential decoding algorithm which is shown to be asymptotically optimum for rates above R_{0} and whose performance bears certain similarities to that of sequential decoding algorithms.

Channel coding with multilevel/phase signals
TL;DR: A coding technique is described which improves error performance of synchronous data links without sacrificing data rate or requiring more bandwidth by channel coding with expanded sets of multilevel/phase signals in a manner which increases free Euclidean distance.

Maximum-likelihood sequence estimation of digital sequences in the presence of intersymbol interference
TL;DR: In this paper, a maximum likelihood sequence estimator for a digital pulse-amplitude-modulated sequence in the presence of finite intersymbol interference and white Gaussian noise is developed, which comprises a sampled linear filter, called a whitened matched filter, and a recursive nonlinear processor, called the Viterbi algorithm.

Rate-compatible punctured convolutional codes (RCPC codes) and their applications
TL;DR: In this article, the concept of punctured convolutional codes is extended by punctuating a low-rate 1/N code periodically with period P to obtain a family of codes with rate P/(P+l), where l can be varied between 1 and (N-1)P. This allows transmission of incremental redundancy in ARQ/FEC (automatic repeat request/forward error correction) schemes and continuous rate variation to change from low to high error protection within a data frame.

Viterbi decoding algorithm for convolutional codes with repeat request
Hirosuke Yamamoto,Kohji Itoh +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the reliability function of the proposed decoding algorithm is asymptotically twice that of the Viterbi decoding algorithm without repeat request, and that in certain practical situations the proposed algorithm can save about 50 percent in constraint length over the ordinary Viterba algorithm for a given performance.
